さきほど流された上記メールについて、はばかりながらご意見申し上げます。以前、
伊藤さんが的確に指摘された文章を、以下にペーストします。趣旨に賛同するしない
ではなく、「手段として、この類のことをしてはいかんのだ。」というのが、私の理
解です。
「なんやあいつ、人のメールにケチばっかりつけとるやんけ。」と誤解しないで下さ

こちらに直接アクセスして直接署名するようにして下さい。（でないと、受け
取る側の重複チェックも大変です。）

力がある方は、これも効果的ですね。
（私は JOIS の人にこのメールを転送して、「完全無料の MedLine に加え、
世の中にはこういう動きもあるんだから、今の JOIS のような受益者負担原
則に基づく有料文献データベースはますます利用者が居なくなりますよ。科
学データベース市場における日本のプレゼンスを維持するためにも、早く無
料化して下さいね」と頼んでみましたが、どうなることやら。）

上村さん、ありがとうございます。おっしゃるとおり、趣旨に関係なく、
この手の chain mail 誘発は、果てしないメールの循環になるので、避け
ていただきたいです。
ところでこの趣旨の chain mail、数日前からあちこちで広がっている様
です。テロ撲滅と報復を求める世論調査結果や一部の国の政府・マスコ
ミの論調とは裏腹に、世界中で、対話の推進、戦争反対の意識が少なく
ないことを感じます。こういう counter action が個人でも世界規模で繰
り広げることができるようになったのは、インターネットの威力かも知
れません。
一方で、殺到する利用者で電話がほとんど使えなくなった非常時のマン
ハッタンでも、メールによる連絡は確実に行なえたようです。神戸震災
の時などにも示された非常時におけるメール通信の確実さは、特定の情
報中枢を作らず、分散処理にすることで核ミサイルによる攻撃に対抗で
きる軍事通信システムとして開発された、インターネットの面目躍如と
いえるかも知れません。軍事技術を利用することで、反戦運動も効率化
されるというのは、皮肉な現象ではあります。
インターネットを開発した国防総省の基礎研究機関 ARPA は、大学にお
金を出して自由にネットワークの研究をさせ、その成果を利用したわけ
です。その ARPA の後継機関に当たる DAPRA の調査団が、２年ほど前
でしたか、私のラボに訪問してきたことがあります。研究内容を調査し
て、資金援助の可能性を探るため、とのことでした。うちはおメガネに
かなわなかったようで、その後連絡はありませんでしたが、同時に訪問
を受けた他の研究室には、実際にその後研究資金提供の申し入れがあっ
たところもあるようです。
遠い他国の片田舎の研究者にまで調査団を派遣して、必要なら研究費を
提供して自国の将来の軍事技術に役立てようという遠大でどん欲な姿勢
は、趣旨の是非や正当性はともかく、すごい発想をする国だなぁ、と感
じました。もっとも、それでテロが防げるとはあまり思えませんが。

I have also received several kinds of chain mails after the national
tragedy. One of those was a big PowerPoint file. We should be careful
because computer system crush might be what terrorists wish.
By the way, a rumor appeared today, saying that Boston will be attacked
tomorrow. It is said that it is unfounded. But it is still scary! Now
this country is in danger. I pray safety of Japanese colleagues, who are
very brave to come to CSH.
